When refugee families arrive in the Triangle, they have lost their homes, country, and loved ones. The journey to rebuild their lives is long and difficult, but welcoming neighbors can support them along the way.
Over decades, Community Sponsorship Groups, or "Co-sponsors", have been key partners in refugee resettlement. They support newly-arrived families through community orientation, social support, and financial assistance.
Community sponsorship, or co-sponsorship, allows North Carolina neighbors to be on the frontlines of welcoming refugees home. Co-sponsors provide both mentorship and financial assistance to help newcomers reach personalized goals.
CWS asks for a 4-month time commitment for each of our co-sponsorship opportunities.
Refugees have to learn so much when they first arrive. One of the gifts of co-sponsorship is providing stable relationships to newcomers over several months.
CWS asks co-sponsors to provide 4 months rent and utilities assistance for newly-arrived families (~$5,000).
Key responsibilities include
securing and furnishing housing
overcoming transportation barriers (teaching families to navigate public transportation and/or helping them get their driver's license)
But you may also help practice English, tutor children in school, drive family members to a doctor's appointment, connect them with local resources like Wheels for Hope and show newcomers free, family fun!
CWS requires all volunteers who are working directly with clients to go through a background check process, attend a training, and sign volunteer forms.
CWS is committed to providing safe and meaningful volunteer experiences for both clients and community members. We appreciate your understanding and patience with this process.
