“The Fund Helped Me Avoid Being Evicted”

English

“The fund helped me avoid being evicted,” she said with a sigh of relief. This single mother of three from Veracruz, Mexico and 15-year resident in the U.S. described to CWS Migrant Services Coordinator, German, how the Immigrant Solidarity Fund (ISF) supported her and her family after she lost her job due to COVID-19.

“Losing my job during the pandemic was one of the scariest things that happened to me. As an undocumented immigrant, finding a job is not easy to begin with and even much more during the pandemic when everything was shutting down. I went through most of my savings trying to pay all my expenses and keep a roof over our heads. The assistance I received from the Fund through your organization helped me pay a big portion of the balance owed for rent and I covered the rest, which was only $300. I want to say ‘thank you’ to you the organization and everyone who helped or donated in some way to the fund, because the assistance given was of much help to me and my family”

Many families like the one described above experienced financial hardships due to COVID-19 and had little to no access to other financial resources during the peak of the pandemic. The Immigrant Solidarity Fund was originally established in 2019 in response to the increased ICE activity that affected hundreds of undocumented households. Today, the Immigrant Solidarity Fund, in partnership with local grassroots organizations and faith communities, is raising funds to offer financial support to eligible households across 5 different regions of North Carolina. We recognize there is still a need from the undocumented community in NC to access resources in a confidential, expedited, and culturally competent way.

If you want to support families like the one highlighted in this blog post, please visit our “About the Fund” Webpage or contact Madison Burke, Migrant Services Coordinator at mburke@cwsglobal.org for additional information on how to support your local Immigrant Solidarity Fund so that undocumented and mix-status immigrant families across North Carolina are not alone when crisis strikes.
