Getting Started:

We work with individuals, student groups, retirees, faith communities, and everyone in between interested in serving their Triangle area community. To volunteer with CWS, you’ll need to first fill out our online Volunteer Application, attend an orientation session, and submit a background check clearance to the CWS office. The orientation session lasts for approximately two hours and will take place at our office at 112 S. Duke Street. We’re in the same building with Parker and Otis coffee shop!

The next volunteer orientation will be Monday, November 2nd, from 5:30-7:30 PM  at 112 S. Duke St. Suite 4B, Durham, NC 27701.

All prospective volunteers will need to get a formal background check clearance from the police department/sheriff’s department/ court system where the volunteer lives before they can begin assisting clients. This process and paperwork costs $25.00, and is usually a quick process (under 30 minutes!).  The results must be mailed directly to CWS Durham or hand-submitted to CWS Durham in a sealed envelope with a clerk’s signature over the seal.

Volunteers are vital to CWS’s work welcoming refugees as they arrive in America and settle into their new homes.  There are numerous ways to get involved, from one time projects like furnishing an apartment to longer term commitments like teaching an ESL class.  We hope that you will find an opportunity that fits your skills and gifts as well as your own time availability.

Please look through the rest of this page, our volunteer opportunities, the list of volunteer resources, and contact our Community Resource Coordinator Jourdi Bosley at jbosley@cwsglobal.org  if you have any questions about serving with CWS, or questions or concerns regarding the background check policy and procedures.
