Getting Started:

We work with individuals, student groups, retirees, faith communities, and everyone in between interested in serving their Triangle area community. To volunteer with CWS, you’ll need to first fill out our online Volunteer Orientation Registration, attend an orientation session, complete our Volunteer Application and obtain a certified criminal background check to the CWS-Durham office. The orientation session lasts for approximately two hours and will take place at our office in the Brightleaf Square area of Durham. We’re in the same building with Parker and Otis coffee shop, and the full address is listed below.

The next volunteer orientation will be Monday, December 7, from 5:30-7:30 PM  at the Church World Service office located at 112 S. Duke St. Suite 4B, Durham, NC 27701.

All prospective volunteers will need to get a formal certified criminal background check from the police department/sheriff’s department/ court system where the volunteer lives before they can begin assisting clients. This process and paperwork costs $25.00, and is usually a quick process (under 30 minutes!).

Please don’t worry about having all your ducks in a row and papers completed by the time your orientation date rolls around. The orientation is a very preliminary part of the process, and does not require any paperwork to attend (though we do ask you to register with your name and basic information here). At the orientation you will receive some more forms and a formal volunteer application, which you will have to complete to be placed accordingly after you have completed the volunteer orientation. Once you’ve completed the orientation, you can send in all your paperwork in one motion by compiling your Background Check, signed Orientation Agreements, completed Volunteer Application, and delivering or mailing the combined items to our office.

Volunteers are vital to CWS’s work welcoming refugees as they arrive in America and settle into their new homes.  There are numerous ways to get involved, from one time projects like furnishing an apartment to longer term commitments like teaching an ESL class.  We hope that you will find an opportunity that fits your skills and gifts as well as your own time availability.

Please look through the rest of this page, our volunteer opportunities, the list of volunteer resources, and contact our Community Resource Coordinator Jourdi Bosley at jbosley@cwsglobal.org  if you have any questions about serving with CWS, or questions or concerns regarding the background check policy and procedures.
