Refugee Run Club

This Saturday morning, April 19th, at 10 AM we’re organizing the inaugural Easter Egg 5K on the Third Fork Creek Trail in Durham. The trail runs along a little creek right near the Wal-Mart on MLK. Come on out and invite a friend!

At the run we will hide Easter eggs filled with candy for runners to find. For $4 anyone can run (or walk or run-walk!) in the event. One fourth of your registration fee will go to support refugee family reunification right here in the Triangle.

Along the course there will be one BONUS egg which will have some kind of fun gift card–Amazon, Full Steam, Bull City Burger and Brewery, something! The amount on the gift card will be determined by the number of runners who RSVP, so the more runners the better the prize!

Parking: We’ll park at Wal-Mart (1010 Martin Luther King Pkwy, Durham, NC 27713 ) and walk down to the event together, so please be sure to arrive a few minutes before 10 AM.

Anyone and everyone is invited, so please feel free to invite people who might be interested! RSVP to Kelly at .

Did you resolve to get in shape AND volunteer in 2014? CWS-Durham has a great opportunity for you!

We meet weekly on Saturday mornings at 10 AM at the Oak Creek Village apartment office (4230 Garrett Road, Durham NC 27707) for Refugee Run Club. Each week refugees from around the world and community volunteers have the chance to get together to get some exercise. Typical runs are anywhere between 5-10K. All fitness levels welcome!

Week One

At our first Refugee Run Club we had more than 25 runners from Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, DRC, CAR, India, and the US.

One thing we have noticed with the start of Refugee Run Club is that not all of the runners have appropriate shoes! Some clients are running in boots or even in hard soled dress shoes.  If you have new or gently used running shoes to donate, please bring them along when you join us for Run Club. Men’s running shoes preferred.

RRC-01252014-1If you have questions about  Refugee Run Club or The Great Human Race, please contact Kelly at Looking forward to running with you all!

  1. Hi, I’m a Duke undergraduate and I think this is such a great idea. However, I’m just wondering if there will be transportation provided from Duke to the Oak Creek Village location?

    • Katherine, thanks so much for reaching out. We LOVE Refugee Run Club. Unfortunately, we do not provide transportation to Oak Creek. If you’d like to join us, there are DATA buses that run from Duke’s Campus to Oak Creek Village. If you have a bike, it’s also biking distance from campus.
